This page explains how copyright and content use are approached on What’s Baking, including sharing, personal use, republication, recipes, images and copyright concerns.
Copyright scope
Unless otherwise stated, original material published by What’s Baking may be protected by applicable copyright law. Depending on the material and the rights held, this may include original written and editorial expression, articles, the original wording, organization and presentation of recipe instructions and accompanying prose to the extent protected by law, original photography where rights are held, graphics or illustrations where rights are held, and original compilations or other site content. In Canada, copyright generally arises automatically when a qualifying original work is created and fixed in a material form; registration is not required for protection.
Recipe-specific clarification
Copyright protects original expression, not underlying ideas or facts. What’s Baking does not claim exclusive copyright over culinary ideas, facts, individual ingredients, measurements, techniques, methods or concepts beyond what applicable law protects. A recipe’s original written expression and presentation may be protected even though the underlying culinary idea and factual ingredient information are not.
Sharing and linking
Ordinary links to public What’s Baking pages and sharing links to recipes or articles are welcome. Brief quotations or excerpts may be used where permitted by applicable law. Identifying What’s Baking and linking to the relevant page is appreciated when reasonable, but attribution or a link alone does not authorize reproduction of an entire protected work or a substantial protected portion.
Personal and non-commercial use
Visitors may view, save or print content for their own lawful personal and non-commercial use, subject to applicable law and any terms stated on a specific page. This permission is not intended to limit rights that visitors already have under applicable law.
Republication and commercial use
Copying or republishing substantial protected portions of articles, original written recipe directions, original photographs or graphics, or other protected content for commercial republication normally requires permission unless the use is permitted by applicable law. Permission depends on the particular material and the rights What’s Baking is entitled to grant.
Images and graphics
Images and graphics may be original, licensed, supplied by third parties, or created or edited with digital or generative tools. Ownership, licensing and permitted use may therefore vary according to applicable law and licence terms. What’s Baking claims rights only to the extent those rights are held, and users should not assume that an image is freely reusable merely because it appears on the site.
Third-party rights
Third-party trademarks, product names, brands, photographs, graphics and other licensed or supplied materials remain subject to the rights of their respective owners or licensors. Their appearance on the site does not mean that What’s Baking owns them or that the relevant rights holder endorses What’s Baking.
Fair dealing and legal exceptions
Nothing on this page is intended to restrict rights or exceptions available under applicable law, including fair dealing under the Canadian Copyright Act.
Permission requests
To request permission for republication, licensing or commercial use, use the Contact page and include the exact page URL, the material requested, the intended use, and where and how it would be distributed. A request does not create permission unless it is confirmed in writing by the person entitled to grant it.
Copyright concerns
If you believe material on the site infringes rights you hold or are authorized to represent, use the Contact page. Include your contact details, identification of the protected work, the exact page URL and material at issue, the basis for your claim, and the resolution you are requesting. What’s Baking may seek clarification or supporting information before acting. Do not submit government identification or unnecessary sensitive personal information.
